demuire Posted August 13, 2004 Author Report Posted August 13, 2004 Still having the cable operated handbrake doesn't make it legal, the handbrake system is meant to be a completely different circuit. I know Keith Fackrell has a second set of calipers on the back of his Escort, and a reservoir on top of the MC on the handbrake, thus an independent system. It seems to change depending on who you speak to... Keith for one told me that it would be legal, and my engineer thinks so too - as long as the cable operated handbrake is completely independant (thus providing a "fallback system") Or something to that effect anyway... One thing I am a little concerned about with the Pro handbrake is the brake lines sticking into the footwell (you can't put bends that close to the tube nuts, as I discovered when making my clutch lines). I had a brief look yesterday and I don't really like the idea of the brake lines running along the side of the footwell, as it is my leg sometimes rubs against the center console (which won't be there for much longer, new gearbox doesn't really allow for it) Quote
Redwarf Posted August 14, 2004 Report Posted August 14, 2004 Really?? I stand corrected! :D Cheers Rob Quote
demuire Posted August 14, 2004 Author Report Posted August 14, 2004 Rob: Spoke to Keith today (he was at the skidpan, Kate's daugher Erin was having a bit of a lesson :D), turns out he also sells hydraulic handbrake levers identical to the one he has in his Escort, for the same price as Seemore. Looks better than the one that Seemore has, and won't have to pay postage, and it's always nice getting things from familiar faces  Might be an option. Quote
Redwarf Posted August 14, 2004 Report Posted August 14, 2004 I've seen Keith's, and they're super sexy. I haven't asked him a price on one, and I've seriously considered one of them, too. Keith's would be better made, too. Quote
NoPsi Posted August 14, 2004 Report Posted August 14, 2004 As I am a tightarse I shall be fabbing my own up with the help of sponsor. I will be interested to see see how Fook's works. I like the idea of the Pro handbrake in that it pulls toward you but I may have to think laterally to fit it into the small confines of the Datsun. The club style setup maybe more practical. Any of you had any experience with the pull style? Craig Quote
demuire Posted August 14, 2004 Author Report Posted August 14, 2004 (edited) Pull style is popular in WRC, and one of the rally Commodores at Mt Cotton today had one, seemed to work quite well. Pity I didn't get to drive it (well, after all he knew quite well what he was doing :D) but I did get to drive a very fun R33, and got some pretty fun rides in STi's, MX5's and others too  Yay tomorrow out with the Skyline Club, more rides in Skylines and maybe get to drive more of them too! The STi really put a new meaning in my head to "back it in and stand on it", I swear we were driving backwards half the time  Craig: If I was being sponsored by someone who made nice things I'd be getting one made up too. Turns out I'm not, and my fabrication skills are second to none as far as suckyness goes. Not to mention my welder is still broken. I did consider asking Craig from Extreme if he could make me one, but I don't think he'd match or beat the price by much. Keith makes nice things. I think I may pursue this option, I just need to make sure I actually have enough money to do it first (and I think I should have a better idea after Thursday) Also reconfirmed with Keith about legality too, all good :) Edited August 14, 2004 by demuire Quote
NoPsi Posted August 15, 2004 Report Posted August 15, 2004 Sounds good my friend. Can't wait to see it so I can copy it. LoL Craig Quote
David[RL] Posted August 19, 2004 Report Posted August 19, 2004 I have hydraulic handbrake on my AE86 :D Quote
demuire Posted September 13, 2004 Author Report Posted September 13, 2004 Picked up my hydraulic handbrake lever today, mmm pretty :P All up $150 for lever, reinforcement plate and all bolts required. I'll post up a photo later. Rob: Was speaking to Keith, and something that occured to me awhile ago but I didn't think about when you were telling me about your handbrake in Redwarf being very hard to use - what bore is your master cylinder on your handbrake lever? With my current setup (3/4" master) Keith recons it'll be virtually impossible for me to lock up my rear wheels with the drum brakes, because my master is just waaay too big. Will suit discs much better, which was why I bought such a big one to start... Quote
Redwarf Posted September 14, 2004 Report Posted September 14, 2004 I know about that one, am actively searching for a smaller bore master cylinder..... Quote
demuire Posted September 14, 2004 Author Report Posted September 14, 2004 Can you get yours resleeved smaller? Keith mentioned he could do mine if I wanted to (but I don't see the point since I'm moving to discs hopefully soon anyway) Quote
irokin Posted September 14, 2004 Report Posted September 14, 2004 I was thinking the other day. if you were having troubles mounting the cable operated handbrake you should look at one of the pull type ones off HQ holdens that mount under the dash.... Quote
demuire Posted September 14, 2004 Author Report Posted September 14, 2004 Have looked at that, but the pull systems are actually quite complex. The simplest one I've found so far is actually out of the shovelnose Corona... Quote
Felix Posted September 14, 2004 Report Posted September 14, 2004 all the pull type ones have rollers you have to worry about, for where the cable changes direction. Quote
irokin Posted September 14, 2004 Report Posted September 14, 2004 it was just a thought. I remember it from my old HZ...no good for handbrake turns.... Quote
