zmit Posted November 26, 2006 Report Posted November 26, 2006 hey guys, AE82 SOHC carbie. 4A-C i just took it for a run around the track today (it was the last one, I'm goin on holidays for 8 weeks on wednesday so i figured why not) previous to racing it, i changed the oil and filter, checked all the plugs (didnt replace em tho) and just basically checked it over mechanically. after doing a few laps (4 or 5) it started heating up (stock standard, u kind of have to expect that) so i pulled it in. popped the bonnet and let it cool down. i noticed some oil dripping from effectively underneath the brake booster (not coming from there though) it was dripping off the mudflap. I did overfill the oil a little bit so I'm hoping it could just be that. after that i took it out again. another 4 laps and then on my final one it seemed to just drop in power. no acceleration, and sounded a bit deeper. it doesnt seem to backfire though. i brought it in, let it cool again. i can't remember any particular point where it jerked or did anything strange i took it out one more time and only managed to get to 120kmhr down the straight. previous to that i managed 140kmhr down the straight on every lap. i still have plenty of oil (while it was hot) but it was very very thin. (liquid) will check it again when it cools down. any ideas as to what i did? Cheers, Tim Quote
zmit Posted November 27, 2006 Author Report Posted November 27, 2006 so i guess no help? I'm guessing a comp issue so ill check that eventually. I'm goin on holidays for 2 months so i will deal with it when i get back. Quote
ancullen Posted November 27, 2006 Report Posted November 27, 2006 Intake issue perhaps? Or you could be right and the head gasket might have failed. I'm useless when it comes to trouble shooting. Quote
zmit Posted November 28, 2006 Author Report Posted November 28, 2006 trouble shootings fun :y: ..... especially when u plug the HT lead back in and it runs on all 4 cylinders again........................................................................... . Quote
zmit Posted November 29, 2006 Author Report Posted November 29, 2006 high tension!!!! the spark plug lead :y: Quote
Old-Skool-Rolla Posted November 29, 2006 Report Posted November 29, 2006 so that was the problem, it was just missing? Quote
ancullen Posted November 29, 2006 Report Posted November 29, 2006 I almost said high tension, but it didn't seem right. Don't worry, you're not the only one to go racing at Hidden Valley and get a very small issue that you mistook for a big one. I've had a loose coil wire that made the engine drop two cylinders, which I thought might have been a mechanical issue. And don't get me started on the f**king intercooler piping. Quote
zmit Posted November 29, 2006 Author Report Posted November 29, 2006 lol. yeah, that was the issue. dad said check the plugs which seemed likely. so the next day i took off the HT lead on no.3 cyl from the plug and it came free completely (as in from the dizzy end as well) so i took out the plug, it seemed fine, put it back in connected it up and realised that i didnt remember if it was connected to the dizzy in the first place. so i connected it up and started it up. suprise suprise. it was fine. :y: adam. what happened with the intercooler piping? :y: Quote
ancullen Posted November 29, 2006 Report Posted November 29, 2006 The intercooler needs another mount made as it can move on the ones on the cam cover. It works the intercooler piping off, meaning that I'm trying to run the engine like a naturally aspirated motor with low compression and a compressor causing drag on the motor with no benefit. The last time it happened, instead of the above happening, it acted like it had a wide open throttle, as the intercooler is after the throttle body, so there's nothing to shut the intake off. Quote
