skiddz Posted November 8, 2006 Report Posted November 8, 2006 oops 86, got my years mixed up there i think the argument of " the supra has an I6 therefore it is closer to the 2000gt than the celicas" isnt valid in my eyes (I'm not saying its not valid at all, just i think there could be a little more to it) the early (first gen 70=>78 ex ra40) ceilcas share so many more cosmetic features than the later model supra. the characteristic "mustang" contour below and slightly behind the rear quarter window, the fender mirrors, ALL JDM celicas came with fender mirrors, the positioning of the guages relative to the driver (all 1st gen), the bonnet vents/slits (ta23-ra28), the slanted front (short nose ta22). and the long bonnet (ta23 onwards) also the longish bonnet was used in the JDM ta22 and ra25's. and backwards opening bonnet but being fair i will look at both sides of the argument similarities for the supra models. the long bonnet (although it opens the wrong way on the supras. the I6, the use of a "pillar" behind the drivers window. slanted front. and hatch thats about all i can come up with.... to me they look alot like the first gen celicas, but the supras have the similar running gear. but they also look a mcfarq load like other cars, like the etype jag, 240z, and the corvette stingray. all of that being said i think we can all agree they look nothing like a ke70 Quote
dysolve Posted November 9, 2006 Report Posted November 9, 2006 Do you know whats funny, you are all just interpreting the info you have a little differently. I did a search on the net and found some toyota history pages and after reading them, you are all right and at the same time all wrong LOL. But anyways lets not get in to a bitch fight about it. I have always had one question about car manufacturers, especially the japan based ones. Since drift racing has gotten so big around the world, why don't they release more RWD cars? I bet if they released a new RWD celica, you would see a few of them drifting with a few months, I net a few of the "86" crowd would change to the "NEW" celica, come on they are even turing WRX's and EVO's in to RWD only so they can drift them. If you watch the USA drifting on TV there are alot of american "TANKS" at the drift's now, and I believe this is only because its just easy to buy a RWD "local" car to race instead of importing one... I know that the guys in my rally club would be in a queue to buy a new "RWD" celica if it was released.. Quote
irokin Posted November 9, 2006 Report Posted November 9, 2006 MkIV TA22 RA28 MkIV TA22 RA28 Granted things change over the years.... The MkIV supra even shares the same radio antenna position among other things. to me they look alot like the first gen celicas, but the supras have the similar running gear. Do I sense a hint of bias?? ...and now I'm late for work ;) Quote
skiddz Posted November 10, 2006 Report Posted November 10, 2006 Do I sense a hint of bias??...and now I'm late for work  no none at all ;) although i do see the similarity with the JZA80 but if ya look at the *A70 and *A6* supras they look nothing like it, not even remotely Quote
love ke70 Posted November 10, 2006 Report Posted November 10, 2006 (edited) so what people are saying is the 2000GT was modeled off the jza80 supra, right? Edited November 10, 2006 by love ke70 Quote
ancullen Posted November 10, 2006 Report Posted November 10, 2006 Yes the Cressida name would have sold well, but I think you'd find it would need to be RWD if they were suddenly going to resurrect the name. I think they actually considered it for the Aurion, but rejected it for some reason. The Lexus GS (with V8 option) as a Toyota instead of the Aurion is exactly what Toyota needed. 3.5L V6 base model (same engine as Aurion), and the 5.0L V8 from the upcoming LS500 (maybe without direct injection) with around 300kW and they'd have a winner. Plus they could always use the 3.5L S/C V6 that they've got planned for the Aurion TRD as a mid-range sports engine. Quote
ancullen Posted November 10, 2006 Report Posted November 10, 2006 The rear 3/4 view comparison between the JZA80 and 2000GT shows just how much the JZA80 is intended to refer to the 2000GT. Hell, TRD even made a 3000GT version of the JZA80, so it's pretty obvious where they gained inspiration for the car. The other Supras may not look exactly like a 2000GT, but the inspiration for the car, eg. the idea of a FR GT car first came from the 2000GT and was continued with the Supra series. It's just the Supras were WAY better thought out than the 2000GT and sold far better as a result. Quote
irokin Posted November 10, 2006 Report Posted November 10, 2006 no none at all  although i do see the similarity with the JZA80 but if ya look at the *A70 and *A6* supras they look nothing like it, not even remotely But neither do the TA/RA22/3/8, RA4x, RA6x... Quote
