Installing A Tacho

Hey

 

I was just wondering if anyone could help me out. I need to install an aftermarket tacho into my 5 speed ke70.

I have no idea where to wire it into. I was under the impression that it would be into the wires behind the clock in the dash. I did a search earlier but nothing helped.

Firstly Where abouts are you from? I'd suggest you update your location in you profile..

 

The tacho signal is taken off the negative side of the coil (black wire), As far as I am aware all KE70s have the wiring behind the dash for the tacho from factory (As you can just swap in a factory KE70 CSX tacho dash cluster and it will work). It is just a matter of wiring it to the correct wire or running another wire if you are not comfortable with being able to locate the correct wire.

 

Did you get a wiring diagram with your tacho at all? I'll attatch an image I got with my old aftermarket tacho in case it may help you understand the wiring layout..

Tacho is it after market in box with instructions?

If so follow them. But if not tachos run a wire to the ignition coil and then they are just a simple frequency counter that counts the pulsing coil and then gives you a rev reading so just wire it to your coil. EASY.

 

My corolla has a lot of lose ends in wire as I believe it was one loom for all so the loose ends were where stuff is meant to go but my car never received those parts from factory. But in my KE70 when I looked behind the dash I could never see wires for a tacho behind my clock. But the wires you found if you know they are the tacho wires from say a car manual and are lose just look at the diagram in your manual and it should have the colour of the wire and where it went on the tacho. But my bet is red is for tacho power...lol But pop your bonnet look at the wires on your ignition coil if one is green or brown and goes back to the fire wall it will be the signal wire and the 3rd one left will be the earth/negative. easy

Ok, Just look at the picture, Its the one on the left of the third connector (going left to right) Marked with the red arrows.

Thanks for the instructions there Medicine_Man, they helped alot.

I got the tacho running after a bit of experimenting with the wires. I'll post some pics up and a small how-to either later on today or tomorrow on how I did it for future reference.

Attach the green wire from your tacho to the black wire on the plug in this picture:

You can twist the wires together and tape them up with electrical tape, but I used a couple of wire connectors like this (you could also use some male-female crimps):

Next you will need to connect the red wire to the "on" wire on your ignition as shown here, it is a black wire with a brown stripe:

However there is another wire on the same plug as rev signal wire that works aswell as shown here:

I connected it the same way as the green wire:

You will then need to find an unpainted screw to earth the black wire onto.

 

Your tacho should work if you have installed it correctly following those steps.

I used your one. It's pretty HEKTIK.

I got most of the rust out, except the shit around the windscreen. I can live with it falling out on me one day :y:

Hi I'm new to the club and I just brought my first car which is a 83 ke70 all stock 4K engine and all but on my dash I have a clock and my mate has a rpm gadge from his ke70 paddock basher that he doesn't use and said I could have it so I was just wondering if use could give me some instructions on how to install it

Super easy. There will be a positive feed from the ignition switch, best bet is to take this from the fuse box. An RPM signal wire from the positive side of your coil, and an earth.

 

You will also need to tap into the instrument lighting circuit so you can see it at night.

 

If you're not sure which is which, post up a pic of the back of the guage.
