Hi guys!
I probably know a few dudes off here, just posting up my latest ride for you all to have a geez at.
I've had a few Corolla sx/gti's but this is the most special I think.
Below is a copy-paste from my other thread!
Righteo.
Everyone likes a thread with a story. This is quite fresh tale, but it's pretty darn interesting. And I hope it'll get more interseting within the next few weeks.
I'll start with some background information for you all.
CAN SOMEONE HELP CALIRFY THIS INFORMATION? DO YOU OWN A 1991 COROLLA SX?
The Toyota Corolla sx / GTI was sold during the the period of 1989 to 1992. The GTI was just a facelifted SX, minus some mod-cons to help lower the price. The build dates went as such
Early 1989 to late 1990 Toyota Corolla SX
Mid 1991 to mid 1992 Toyota Corolla GTI.
I have collected a lot of junk on these cars, magazines, reviews, press material etc. According to all this, The Toyota Corolla SX was offered in
LR Essex white Red body pinstriping
Calyipso Red (Excuse the spelling) Chrome body Pinstriping.
When the GTI was introducted, they offered a Seal Grey Mica Package. This meant for a huge sum of money, you received a Metallic gunmetal grey paint job. Due to the pricing of this package, not many sold in this colour making it quite sort after. So the colour chart from mid 1991 onwards with the GTI, went like this.
Essex white LR Red body pinstriping
Calyipso Red (Excuse the spelling) Chrome body Pinstripin
Seal Grey Mica MZ -Red Pin strping Optional paint pacakge.
Anyway about this car in question.
My friend showed me this ad. Here are photo's for you.
The add title read 1991 Toyota Corolla SX, Grey
At first I was like, Yea right. Corolla Sx's where not MADE in 1991, let alone made in Seal Grey. Some tossers probably made a replica or some junk.
After looking at the photos, I said to myself
Wait. It has the Futaba twin tip muffler that only came out on sx, it has SX door decals that are now discontinued, SX interior, it has the works?
What also phased me was the fact it has a colourcoded wing. The GTI had a colourcoded wing, NOT the sx. The SX wing was left unpainted in black plastic. Furhter fueled me to believe that it has had a respray.
So I decided to do some investigation and give the dealer in Victoria a call, just out of interest. I wasn't planning on buying this thing.
Me - Can look at a few things for me whilst you're on the phone
Him - sure
Me - Can you tell me what colour the paint is in the bay
Him - It's a non metallic off grey
Me - Great, can you read me the colour code stamped on the VIN plate?
Him - MY eyes are taking a while to focus... ah, MZ!
Me -Ok, can you provide me the Vin and engine number so I can give Toyota a Bell?
Him - Sure
After I got off the phone, I did a quick google of MZ Paint. Believe it or not, it came up with
MZ Seal Grey Toyota 1991 to 1992
So, it's actually stamped on the VIN that it came in a colour that wasnt even around then? This car was also built in march 1991, the period where NO corolla SX/GTI's where being made? Very odd.
So I decided to call Toyota and spoke to someone in the right department.
Toyota - I cannot tell you too much about the car due to Privacy law.
I proceeded to sweet talk my way in; and after not too long she said.
Toyota - I'm not supposed to be telling you this, but that car was a Toyota Company Car... You know, not that kind...
Me - Oh, so it's a piece of Toyota History then! Very cool...
Toyota - Indeed it is mate, just out of interest, what are the plates on it?
Me - EMS-127
Toyota - Chirst, she still has our plates on it, the original ones!
After I hung up the phone, I frantically went through my magazines until I found.
CAR Australia March 1991 Toyota Corolla GTI Glimpe
Car Australia April 1991 Toyota Corolla Test drive.
Check out the plates of this GTI was that made BEFORE the GTI was offically built in July, the first press car.
EMS-172
Now check out the plates on the march built 1991 Corolla, AFTER the corolla SX production was seized.
EMS-127
Very odd indeed. Is this car a Mule they used to test new things for the GTI? Is it a crossover car? What the f##k is it exactly?
All we know is, amoungst the Corolla SX Enthusiast group, that this is so far, to our recollection, the only 1991 built Toyota Corolla SX. Not only that, but possibly the only Factory grey Toyota Corolla SX ever made.
The car in en-route to my place from Victoria as we speak. Once I get it, I hope Toyota will open their doors and let me know what the f##k this car exactly is.
