why the long face carbonboy?
-
second that i too have to run 98 too otherwise my corolla will ping its tits off.. I have twin 40 dellortos on my 4age and ill get only 350-(400 if I'm feeling lucky)km a tank but I'm in majour need of a tune. Once i get a tune it will be a different story though

problem was the alternator so i just re crimped the cable and everything was good as new again but while i was test driving it with my mate he noticed a fair bit of coolant leaking from the passenger side so yay now the heater core or pipes going to the core are farked.. it never ends >|.. thanks for the help though guys

sounds good, ill give it a shot and i think it is carbon build up because my car runs pretty rich and when i did my head gasket there was a fair bit of carbon on top of the pistons... thanks heaps for that... this is why i love RC quality info and help from people

problem most likely solved... i was having a look around the engine bay tried to start the car fuel pump primed everything was normal then i went to start it and it struggled to turn over, i checked the battery and it showed 11V which is low.. I then looked at the alternator and checked all the wires and bam the red wire which actually carries the charge had snapped inside the crimp so it looked connected but was in fact not touching and not charging.. hopefully get some eyelets tonight and give it a go and see if everything is sweet if not i will check the timing as the car doesnt even start.. pretty sure the alternator is the culprit though, funny how i ruled it out straight away and how you always expect the worst when things go wrong haha.. Also found out why the car ran for a second after i turned the ignition off, its called dieseling and its just fuel, vapour, etc that was still in the chamber but still combusted even though there was no spark due to heat/fuel passing through the carb still, its happened to me before and its a very rare occurrence but after the car died on me i didnt rule that out as a possible cause either until now.. i will post back here when i have some results.. thanks for the help though guys Nick

Thanks man i limped it home and just got through the door now... I think its going to be a pretty sleepless night... Ahhh the joys of owning an old car

I was driving home tonight and as i was driving home i pulled into maccas to get something to eat. Everything seemed fine but as i was waiting for my food in the drive through all my lights started to flicker ( like dim then go back to full power, dim then full power, etc)... I go to take off the car felt sluggish then started backfiring through the carbs really badly... I pulled over turned the car off checked everything and it all seemed fine then i took off my air filters and started it.. It cranked really slowly then the cranking sped up till it started.. I thought it was the altenator but then i remember that my car did another thing which was really weird today, when i turned the ignition off the motor kept running for like a second or so really violently before it turned off like it was trying to run with no spark... Its got me really stumped and worried with what it could be, i know it seems like a really stupid problem to have but I'm quite mechanically minded and even this one has me scratching my head... The car is an AE71 with a 4age that has had twin 40mm dellortos put on it and it also has an MSD 6AL ignition installed... Sorry if my post contains poor grammar I'm on my phone, cold, stuck until I'm confident the car can run well enough to drive home and its 2am... Any positive help is appreciated, thanks

Shit just got real :|

Hahaha ive seen this in an estate in rowville... f@$k JDM thats HDM as f@$k :P... They are also pretty cool wheels, you shouldve kept them though imo... Ahhh well you can't always stop shit like this from happening when you sell a car, just remember it could be worse....

Haha yea i have pretty much the same set up and i had to cut my exhaust just before the diff and that was loud enough for me so i would hate to hear it streight off the extractors... Sounds tuff as though and would get heaps of attention for probably all the wrong reasons :P haha... Glad to hear its running and on its way to completion, good stuff mate

Just curious what did you go in the way of ignition? MSD 6AL is great and makes getting the whole thing running much easier as its a multi spark ignition with a big spark and the rev limiter really helps if you miss shift or something

gave the dellortos a quick tune with a mate... the carbs originally had the idle screws turned out 2.5-3 turns which is a lot, i think the previous owner was trying to compensate for top end by allowing the idle needle to pump more fuel into the carbs throughout the whole rev range. this was also the reason why it probably used to bog down so bad at low rpm due to it running so rich. the idle screws are now turned out only 1.5 turns and it now runs really good with great mid/top end range, it still bogs down but no where near as bad as it used to, but i guess it does need a proper tune and this will probably get done once i get a decent amount of dosh but for now its all gooooood :y: :laff: :y:

its my birthday on this day but if i don't celebrate it on the day then i possibly might make an appearance with the rolla after it being off the road for ages
-
thanks mate... and yes expect to see me on the next cruise :P

new update... head gasket has been changed over and ran well for one start up then died and wouldnt start up again due to an unknown problem which turned out to be the fuel pump shitting itself some how... A new fuel pump has been purchased and just got installed now, i started it up just before and it ran really well except for just a minor tune which is needed.. should be on the road in no time and i can't wait :D ... Also just a quick thanks to bAKER for giving me some quick info about fuel pump

possible panda colour scheme? :P

+1 on this, problems always come in one big hit, then its quiet for a little while, then another big hit just comes again... its the way of life and toyotas :P

:( picture says it all, headgasket let go at the 4th cylinder but after inspecting the headgasket i couldnt actually see a crack or break so i don't know if the gasket warped or the head warped... I'm taking the head to get checked out this week and to get machined, fingers crossed that there is nothing majour.. I'm also looking at gaskets and just wondering what the standard 4age thickness is??? also what is the best possible gasket to get? standard? graphite? metal? copper? any help and experiences would be great and really helpful to me... thanks Last but not least i just want to say a huge thank you to my dad who helped me pull everything off and continued working while i had to go work :)

compression test results in.... cyl 1:200 PSI cyl 2:200 PSI cyl 3:195 PSI cyl 4:210 PSI give or take 1-3 psi due to the inaccurate reading of gauge even so there is nothing major enough to worry about but now i have another problem, before the comp test the car started and ran fine but i unplugged the wire going to the distributor and i disconnected the fuel pump so that i could do the compression test. After doing the compression test i plugged everything back on and double checked everything over and now it wont start and when i got it to start it was running rough as anything and it stalled and yes the plugs are all in the right places as they are all marked so its not miss firing its just farked now.. if anyone could throw some ideas at me as to what it could be it would be really helpful..

haha thanks man if its still for sale after i fix this and then sell it i will be on it :)

my flat spot is due to it just being rich as anything and i hate it, makes it hard to drive but I'm pretty used to it now... I love your corolla and motor and what you have done with it, its pretty cool plus i love the sound of a charger whining... i might have to get this thing fixed then come on a cruise soon, then ill probably end up selling it soon... as much as i love it and love driving it its just getting too time consuming and expensive to maintain, plus being a student doesnt help... but i can agree with you 100% don't let people drive your car but i guess we all learn from our mistakes :P
-
Yea I'm doing comp test tomorrow if its bad news ill take it down to my mechanic ASAP and get a new gasket for him to install, i would do it myself but i don't have the time at the moment as I'm back at uni and starting a new job... Back end damage was done when i let my mate drive it and he stalled when he turned a corner and other mate ran into the back of it because he stalled around a blind corner and didnt see it until it was too late lol... rule of thumb don't let people drive your car if they can't drive a car on carbs which has a flat spot

when will i get a break? the problems just keep rolling in... did a full service on the weekend.. oil, oil filter, plugs, while i was there i decided to change my fan belt too as it was making a little noise not too bad but you could hear it if you were near the front of the car, while i was there i noticed the altenator bracket was cracked at the top and so i went down to the wreckers picked one up.. came home washed the car then went to change the fan belt and bracket, lucky i did it because the tension of the belt was the only thing holding this together... :blinks: Gave the girl a polish came up pretty good i think shouldve used a cutting polish though as some of the blemishes didnt quite buff out... The big one was today while driving to uni i went to maccas to pick up some brekky as i was running late and wile i was there i noticed white smoke, yes i know it should smoke in coolish weather but this was more then usual but i thought it might go away... but it didnt really...I got into the city everything was all good then just before i hit lygon st temp went up quickly then i started to worry quite a bit.. parked it, went to class thought of what it could be... rings? head gasket? water in the engine from when i washed it? Overfilled oil? I waited for everything to cool then got preppared for the worst went down opened up the radiator and it was low, filled it up but there was no milkyness so i got a little happier then i opened the oil cap and found this bitch underneath it and i once again died inside :( ... :bash: P.S.. Dip stick makes it look like there is way too much oil in there, it is usually where the F starts, its the way I'm holding it which makes it look that full....... It gets more interesting because i drove it home and checked everything again and the dip stick still has good oil on it, it didnt smoke at all on the way home, didnt get hot and the radiator was still full so now I'm here left scratching my head... ill probably do a compression test tomorrow and that will let me know if its the head gasket or ill have to check the cooling system to see if its farked... :bash: appart from that I'm loving life and still waiting for my break from all this shit... :bash: :bash: :bash:
