  1. they didn't have crank ref' and cam sync.. its and old injection system.. just a tach pulse. if you are using stock ECU just mount two lobes on the crank pulley.. 180 deg apart. at about 10 BTDC and slap a VR/Hall sensor on it. if your turboing it, take your stock dizzy apart, lock it, pull out all the point triggering parts. get an aftermarket ECU, do as i said on the crank. this way you can control both fuel and spark for your setup. that's what i'm doing on my 4K-TE..using MSnS Extra (megasquirt)!   2. two different motors totally one would be a K series, other is an A series haha all K engine are push rod type with non-cross flow heads A series has both cross flow and non cross flow heads, AC head is single cam non-cross flow, GE and FE are dual cam(difference being the Valve angle and the FE having two cams driven off one cam wheel) cross flow 4k is 1.3L, 4A is 1.6L Bellhousing pattern is different. K series come with K series Gbox, A series come with T series Gbox in order to swap the k out for an a you would need to fabricate some custom engine mounts and (i think) gearbox mounts aswell, also make sure shifter position is the same otherwise pull out the disk cutter and let the sparks fly. guys please correct me if I'm wrong lol hope this helps David
  3. Yeah i wonder how low the comp will be.. 8-8.5 would be good about 20PSI.. so i might shave the head so that the CR isnt tooo low lol..\ as for the head bolts i just want to upgrade them, i know that the bolts are the same , just want to upgrade them..
  4. Hey Guys, Well my project has been going super slow (4KTE), got all the parts, just need to put it together. Ive got a 4K-U engine with dished pistons (can tell by the two lumps on the head under plugs 1 & 4). soon ill be getting a head off a regular flat-top 4k (in order to drop CR) my question is is it a straight swap? pull off my head and put the "new" one on? or do i have to swap over the push rods or anything like that? second Q is.. Where can i find ARP Head Studs and Bolt? since i will be boosting, and quite a bit i recon, i want the head to sit nice and tight.. Thanks, David
  5. nahh can't be a charmant.. my rear lights not pull out that much to the sides, and they aint slanted either. and the head lights aint slanted eaither on the charmant.. although i do wish my charmant looked like that.. low with some real negative offset rims.. awesomeeeee! buttt.. yeah the boot does remind of the charmant, and the back door window looks kinda similar.. on the rolla it one piece, on the charmant there are two.. my 2c..   6. He ment the Carina E, we got em here powerd by a 3S-FE engine.. aint the best but i assume its better than a 4A-FE. parts are way too hard if not impossible to obtain here in Israel, so we are looking for a cheap'ish but yet powerful engouh solution. David

Hey, off topic. i dunno if u heard, but matt went to the yard to get my 7k EFI setup, and the bloke there sold the last one.. =\ so I'm stuck, might have to make fit a manifold from another car.. (not nesseserly toyota) back to topic, i know that most if not all charmants here are flat pistons, seen three already.. so I'm gonna look for a whole engine, and use the head. David

Guys, up till now i was under the impression that me little 4K had flat top pistons, so i wanted to get my hands on some dishies to lower the CR.. goin through some old threads the other day, i came pass a post explaining how to tell the diffrence between the two type of heads, via a photo, there was a shot of a 4K looking at the spark plug side, and on the two outer plugs, there was a little metal stip on the bottmem side of each hole. looking at my head today, i saw that my head hat there little stips on the outer spark plug holes, straight away took a look at my friends 4K, and he did not have them. which leads me to suspect that i have dished pistons, and he has flat tops. is this correct? so the only way i can lower the CR now is to bolt on a head from a flat top 4k..am i right so far? i got allot goin thrugh my head right now, so I'm sorry for the long post.   9. guys my friend found this on Ebay. front rear upper sturt bars and a c pillar bar. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/84-87-85-86...emZ220271602569 take a look, my Daihatsu Charmant is heavily based on the KE70/AE71 corolla mechanicly wize also chasis (identical, slighly diffrent look though). could someone tell me if these fit a KE70?   11. lol even though the law is strict, we still break it. can't help it.. engine swaps, boosting engines, Throttle bodies. loads of people do that here. and what can i say, the law wont stop me from doing any mods to my car the funniest restirction that we have here is the size and width of rims and tires, u can put a rim that is wider and bigger that the stock. so for me, by law i can't put anything bigger that 14"... what can you say about that? ;) David

At the moment this is all i got, took it the day i went to see the car. interios is in great condition, bodywork if just fine, got a few small surt spots, nothing to serious to worrie about. engine has done 170,000 Km, but it has to have a rebuid, just so that i can feel safe. here's the pic, ill take a few more photos on the weekend.. ;) David

Thanks for the welcoming! :D Not form the Uk, I'm an Ex-South African, I live in israel.. here the law does not allow any mods on cars in any mechanical way, but there are many modified cars Here, we got no sports cars other than the Scooby, Evo's, MX-5, Silvia's, VW sports cars, american cars and so on.. parts aint cheap either. No supra's, no skylines, no AE86's.. So my best choise for a budget drift car was the charmant, and I'm happy with it, and i know that ill get all the help I need over here! :yes: Once again, thanks for the warm welcome! David
  15. Hi there, My name is David, Ill be 18 in two weeks time. i just bought my first car a couple of weeks ago, it aint a corolla, but its based on it. There are a few here... a Daihatsu Charmant. its a 1983, got a 4K engine mated to a K40 4 speed box. I had this car in mind for months, planing to swap the tranny to a K50, or maybe even a W56, and change the engine for a 4AFE. but hey, it aint that simple here, parts, engines and gearboxes are expensive. so ive decided to stick with my cool 4K engine, give it a rebuild, turn it to EFI with MegaSquirt, and for the best part (for me at least), give it a little bit of boost. so ill need some help here. first of all, a rebuild is a must. i would like to lower the CR, so what would be best to do? get low comp pistons (if there are any) orr swap the head from a 5K or 7K? would also need to know what cam to put in for the best of both worls - drivability and power. and most important question, whats the max boost that i could run on one of these engine, if for instance, i gave it a rebuild, porting and polishing, lower CR and EFI and electronic spark system? sorry for all the questions, I'm just exited about it! :D Thanks, David Resnik
