Got some time off work. Painted the hanging panels: Doors, guards, and boot lid. Time for some colour sanding, which is going to take a while... anyone up for prune hands?
-
Its going to be my partnerin crime's daily. We initially wanted stock KE70 but this came our way. The long term plan is to keep it a crisp little example of Toyota goodness. :jamie:
-
Finally got my SX (Datsun) rims. they clearly need a freshin up. Polish the face and black the inserts. Thankfully tha shape allows for easy polishing, Mexican style :jamie:

Looks good in white. :y:

4K break down ? What! Oh. :) What carby is on the Gemi?
-
Good form alex. Love the black stockies and the super lows. The original colour looks pretty good in the 2nd pic, though a crisp white will be the ticket me thinks. They also look the sh!t in red. Go the T18's :)

That was the plan if I couldn;t find any seals... Looks like a goer with the uri. :)

Are tail light seals for KE70/TE72 still available withouth having to buy the entire lights?

Yes. Although I had thoroughly cleaned the gun, there was slight obstruction of the breather hole so the chamber wasn't equalizing enough. Good to see you're into the MoPars. VE's are my fav of the Dart style Vals. Are you running a slant or a teen? I got a VK Sportpack ute (next project) and 68 Dodge Phoenix cruiser. Anyways the T-banger has been resprayed plus I gave the bonnet and plenum cover some satin black. They will rubbed back and resprayed, just for practice. I've begun putting it back together. Plus I finally got to put on the brand spankin new windscreen. Still gotta spray the hanging panels. Also still waiting on my SX rims, which might make it look a little General Lee.
-
Finally got some paint on the body. Unfortunatley the gun started playing funny buggers on the last coat, so i'll have to rub back and give another good coat.

Well its been quite some time. Been busy with my house, buying an old Dodge, getting doner cars for my ute and getting my Torana going. But I have gotten a few things done. Body and bonnet ready for paint, doors in primer and dash almost retrimmed. Pics up soon. Also got a small collection of doner T18's

Cheers seabiscuit. Seeing as not much can be done in the way of paint or performance at the mo, its good to give it some lovin in other departments. :y:

The body and bonnet are still in primer waiting to be sanded and painted. HOWEVER I've begun putting in the interior. Big clean and vacc and in with the carpet. The seats have been de-trimmed and washed. Plus the front seat belts have been re-webbed with a new retacter mechanism. This is the trim soaking pre-wash. Good as new.

All good tips for finding a clean. Be mindful, more often than not, bogged panels sound pretty much like clean panels. Unless you have a "good ear" tapping may only show up really bad work. Some people also put iron filings in the bog to make it magnetic. As you said, use your eyes. Look for inconsistancies, odd colours, also look at the the gaps. Use your hand. Tip: don't feel for imperfections, feeling for imperfections doesn't work very well, instead feel for a good panel, if its not good you'll notice. That the way. If you love your Rolla, give it some prtection against the one thing that can kill a Toyota... RUST. Some POR 15 and some cavity wax, and she'll be good to your for many years to come. This is what serious vintage car collectors do to their cars. Best thing is its not exspensive. :y:

Nice ride you have there. Bring on the T18's. :y:

There's nothing wrong with not knowing. No one is born with the knoledge. The problem is videos like this making people believe thats the right way to do it. Just be mindfull when buying a car, if they say they've repaired the rust, do they mean they've done it like this or properly. :P
-
Worst story i've heard is a guy i used to work with wanted to sell his car. It had badly rusted out sills... So you went to the bakery, asked for all the old stail bread, stiffed it into the sills and bogged it up. Some oor person bought that car. Sometimes it what you can't find that can be a worry. I once went to check out a Dtasun 1000 wagon. It looked a very shabby, f@$ked paint, shiity wheels, un matching seats, and a lean to one side... but try as i may i couldn't find any rust, not 1 bit. Had me very worried as i was sure it had to have rust. Turns out it was very clean and rust free.

Ok lets say resin doesn't stick as well to paint as it does to metal... Worse case sinario the resin to paint join cracks .. the metal is still sealed and protected. Fibreglass is easier to repair than rust and a small amount of rust is easier to repair than a big hole. I'd rather chance a crack in the paint than chance rust reforming. :y:
-
No. I mean get some paint on there first, preferabley rust paint (POR 15) The resin can pull away from the metal. The gap will be micro scopic but it can lead to moister getting in there and turning everything to pus again. Where as if you get some good paint on there, the paint wil adhere to the metal better and the resin will adhere better to the paint. AND it will mean double protection. :y:
-
Depends on a few things but GENERALLY if its not too big good lead fill is pretty good. Thats the ticket my friend. Do you seal the metal before apllying the fibreglass, as FG can pull away from bare metal leaving the tiniest gap. This can accure through movment or through the shrinkage during the curing stage.
-
If you follow the advise in that video, you will only make matters worse. Here's a few thing we need to consider: - Unsealed metal will rust. - Bog is porous - Fibrefill is only a bog re-enforcer, it does not make bog water tight. - The SYMPTOM was HIDEN, rust was not repaired. You can still do a thorough rust patch-up without a welder. 1) remove ALL rust.. front and back and anywhere it may be hiding. 2) coat all bare metal with a good quility rust paint. 3) once dry, scuff area thoroughly 4) now patch as per video OR buy a propain tourch, some flux and some brass rods. Before you walk off thinking your job is done, stop! Rust accured there for a reason, figure out why it rusted there then take action to revent it from accuring again. Corollas ALL rust in the same places, they all have water issues, adress these issues and the rust is less liekly to return. :y:

Sadly thats not some random dude off the street, thats a video made by Haynes, an automative book publisher. :y:

I came accross this vid on youtube recently. Any person that excepts this as a suitable means to repair a car needs to be shot did and have their given to someone that will will treat it right. :y:

Cheers man. As much as i would love to head back to SA and catch up with some old friends, i can't imagine being able to fit my work shop into my carry-on lugage :y:

DAMN thats one clean bumper. All that chrome really set it off and goes well with the polished beast.
