  1. like i said, not my handy work. i went inside quickly and came back out to that  i know it can be salvaged, just i lack the skills to do it, and i refuse to let my friend try again......ever.
  2. Well, since i've had no experience with welding or cutting i got my friend to help out. this is what he did..... Pic 1 Pic 2 Pic 3 so now i have two holes in my car and no way to fix it myself. i'm really screwed now.... edit: for some reason it didnt like the pics so i had to link them from elsewhere.
  3. never said it was just surface rust? i said the minor parts are, thats all. thanks KE30, thats what i thought had to be done. my friend helping me is pretty skilled with metal, i think he's a boilermaker, and i may be able to bribe someone else into assisting :)
  4. well, i have found a mate who can weld for me but he's never done this before either. i will hopefully be able to borrow my other friends grinder and maybe orbital sander. not going to paint it myself, leaving that to someone more skilled. i know i will have to bog it up though, but thats not incredibly hard. worst of the rust is here the drivers side sill is not as bad as this, but runs along the same sort of area. also, any idea on what sort of sheet metal to use?
  5. hi guys, i have to fix some rust on my '79 KE55 corolla (wow, shock horror!). Was wondering if anyone who has done this before could give me a hand. First time i've had to fix rust and a little unsure of how to do some things (eg: welding) Of course there will be renumeration for anyone who can help. its mostly on the rear quarter panel, passenger door sill and a few very minor spots here and there. most of the minor spots are just surface rust though and could be removed easily. I did have a friend who was going to help me with this but he can't do it anymore, so i'm seeing if anyone in brisbane can give me a hand. So if anyone can give me a hand let me know. thanks, Mike
  6. yeah i'll have a look at the choke. it usually does it on a cold start. no problems if the engine is warmed up. its making a very loud ticking noise now as well, all through the rev range, not just on idle. i have a feeling this could be related to the timing though as i havent had a chance to adjust it or check it.
  7. hmmmm, it did it again the other night. was only upon start up. coughed and struggled to get to idle speed even with my foot flat? gave it a good rev quickly and heard a loud popping noise. ran fine after that, but its ticking loudly instead now?
  8. replaced the dizzy cap and rotor button. i've got new plugs for it here, just need to put them in. also, what gap should be used on it?
  9. it ran pretty good, and then just got a little worse gradually. runs good now, no power loss, lots of torque :P well for a 1.3 anyway. i know i need to get the air/fuel ratio adjusted as well.
  10. ok, replaced dizzy and rotor button. runs better now. do i need to adjust the timing at all? if so how?
  11. ok, sounds like a bit of work. i'll try and source the parts soon I guess. not the biggest mechanical person, but i have a basic understanding. what is the dwell though? nah, no smoke. it idles fine and everything, its just under load its terrible.
  12. the plugs seem fine, just have a small amount of oil on them, they arent black though. Checked the dizzy, and all the contacts are worn away pretty bad. they have small recesses in them and white powder forming in them. same can be said about the arm. would this cause it?
  13. hi guys, just bought a KE55 coupe the other week and its starting to have some engine problems. The engine is a 4K-C with a Fiat Webber on it and everything else standard. It has some trouble starting up, especially when cold. On my way to work this morning it had a distinct lack of power. as in, it struggled to get past 60kph in third. It free revs fine, but under load it coughs and splutters, sounds like its misfiring. some times it runs ok. but this only lasts for about 20 seconds, then it goes back to the coughing. It was running fine just a few days ago, but has started doing this more and more lately. any help would be appreciated guys, Thanks, Mike
