still waiting for results to come, but we think that we got first P2(1600)QRC for sunday. it was a weekend with hi's and low's. in reece on thursday tony(TRD) broke an axle, a quick trip up the coast for me on thursday night had the 2 spare axles fitted and the car ready for scurtineering on friday. saturday was all good until stage 7, 5k's in and one axle cried enough so tony easied off only to have the 2 follow suit 1k from the end of the stage right where the spectator point was. 2 broken axles=no drive.rally over for saturday. we trailered the car out of the stage and back to service and then racked our brains on what to do. one of our service crew members(Toa Cooper) is a welder,so a quick trip back to brisbane to repair axles and sleeve them, hoping that they would be strong enough to finish sunday. under ARC rules you can restart the next day if the car is into parc ferme by midnight. while the axles were being repaired tony and our other service crew member Dylan changed the gearbox and clutch(removed paddle clutch) this was to relieve drivetrain stress on the axles. all was finished by 11.30pm. Tony nursed the car through sunday feeling more confident with every stage,as a result of just finishing sunday we managed to, by the smallest of margins take out QRC P2. now it's time for Sprinter diff. Teddy has what was left of one axle. photos Teddy??? I'd like to thank ALL the people who offered there Assistance, special thanks to Matt and Rob. :)

i don't know if anyone has said this already but it sounds like the rims on a 92-97 townace van, they're 14" 114pcd and 6" wide.

does it have a diagnostic plug? what sort of computer do you have? whats the engine, model, year????? there are about forty different reasons the engine check light comes on. need more information.

i started my rally career back in 1988 with my brother Tony, always as a service mechanic. have worked for a few different teams in that time, including Suzukisport where i was chris atkinson's number 1 mechanic in 2004 APRC series which covered rallys in Countries like NZ,japan, china, and AUS. helped build and test the 04 super 1600cc suzuki in hungary. Prepared and serviced Monster Tajima's Suzuki escudo for race to the sky in NZ for 04 and 05. but i still love corollas.

just thinking that you might have to earth out a lead or put the computer in to timing mode before you touch anything, as for changing the timing, you could do more damage than good. i'd stick with what the factory says. what other mods has the engine had.eg, cam, head work??? changing just the stactic timing won't yield much HP, but you can F**k the engine if you give it too much.
-
did you take the head off so you could get the cam out??? if so you've done that the hard way. you can take the lifters out though the spark plug holes, it's a little tricky but is faster than taking the head off. a little trick for when you put the timing cover back on, take the studs out and replace them with short bolts, makes it alot easy to put the cover on.

honestly!! wasting your time with an old boat anchor, try using an alloy v8, like toyota has in the soarers. less weight(power to weight ratio), they rev harder (quad cam, multi valve)and aren't as hard on fuel, and it'll last longer without giving as many problems(toyota).

i have a fuel pump at work(off 5k) you can have. where do you live?

catch phrase of the month!!!!!!! :)

i think YES, after all, you are driving a vehcile that weighs about 2 tonnes. you need a special license to ride a motor bike and that's hi powered but weighs less, also a forklift, that's under powered but weighs more. basically people who drive these large 4wd's HAVE to understand what they are driving, there not normal cars, they take longer to stop, etc. saying all that, i drive a van, if a little kid was behind it, i wouldn't see them. do i need a special license?? maybe anyone who owns or drives a LARGE 4WD should have to under go a practical driving test to prove they understand what they are driving. there's no easy answer.

NICE starlet!!!!!!!!! i love starlets

yip you're right Rob, should be ok for a one off clean in petrol, continued cleaning in petrol dries the paper out and it starts to loose it's ability to filter. if looked after and cleaned the right way you can get ten years out of the filter. i think the ones on the rally car were 13 years old before we replaced them.
-
NONE of the above, if you use solvent you'll f**k the element. soapy water is what you should be using and let it dry before you re-oil it.
-
i just finished reading that and like you NOT HAPPY!!! sorry Teddy.
-
sounds good, it'll give me chance to run over somethings before the rally. by the way, we are seated 5th for this event. you can give me a hand to take that engine off the stand.
-
that sounds like a really big job you've got a head of you, i'm sorry to hear that you can't make it. if you need grinders, welders or anything to help just give us a call, all to happy to help. now teddy!! how much do you want for him??? and what can we do with him(to him). if Teddy wants to come service for us, we'd be all to happy to have him, saying that, there might not be to much to do(wishful thinking). Teddy!!!! interested?????

i think it was $180 just for the plate, the pressure plate is heavy duty but it's been in there for a while, not sure what that was worth. it wasn't exedy who made the centre, it was though some one at brisbane sporting car club. we can get you one if your interested.

Xany: when you come around you can have a look at the short shifters we have. we have 2 TRD quick shifts here you can look at to give you an idea how to make one. they fit both early and late T-50's and K boxes. (it had Mr Wayne Daniels scratching his head for a bit). takes a bit to stump wayne!

i've got a couple of ideas, when and if you're reginding the crank, get it ground to suit so you get the right clearances, you may need extra baffling in the sump, it could be getting oil starvation on acceleration, and the last would be to lift the oil pressure, but not to high, an extra 20 psi is usually enough. hope this helps.

the gearkit at the time was $2500 nz dollars, :P it was brand new in 1989 and has only done 3 events. 1st-2.341 2nd-1.607 3rd-1.195 4th-1.1 5th-0.886 we were looking at the straight cut gearset from palmside for the T50. maybe when we get prize money for rallying.
-
yeah 5 seconds over 10k's is worth the grief, i knew the trd clutch plates were still available, but i wouldn't buy one from any dealer here, they all want way to much money for them. the ratios for the T50 and the spare K50 are just standard, the T50 has slightly better ratios than the standard box, we do have a TRD close box there, but is no good for rallying, it's got a huge 1st and 2nd gear then 3-4-4 there's only a 500rpm drop,it'd be ok for the track. the diff ratio is 5.1(TRD) with a VERY tight LSD(TRD). hoping to have it going this afternoon.

well Tony has decided to spend some much needed money on the rally car to make it faster,(i'm talking stage times). so out came the old standard K50 box and we started to rebuild the T50, i ordered the bearings while tony found all the parts that were lying around the workshop after the box was stripped 3-4 years ago and to his surprise we'd lost 5th gear syncro hub(f@$k).Rolla club came to the rescue and the rebuild was looking good until he went to find the clutch plate(20 spline)you guessed it, no were to be seen. sob so he decided to buy a new paddle clutch(clutch). good move i thought, wrong!!! checked the clutch plate against the pressure plate and the centre was to big, apparently one model pressure plate has a small step in it and you have to machine the guts out of it to fit (spent all day on a lathe)but now it fits. now the rebuilt gearbox(t-50)has better ratios and with the new paddle clutch the car should be .5 second per km quicker. f@$ken lotta work for .5 second.
