For those that are interested, BP responded to my enquiry and confirmed that they ship Ultimate from their two refineries (Brisbane and Perth) to all their outlets.

Ooooooo, I really started something here. I did'nt realise that there is such passion in the fuel scene nor did I know the detrimental effects some fuel have on engines. Thanks SuperJamie. I often wonder where the companies get their fuel seeing that in Sydney at least there only two refineries Caltex and Shell. and other cities only one refinery. So where do Mobil and BP source their fuels? Are they simply rebranded Caltex or Shell or do they ship it is from their own refinery interstate or offshore? Does anyone know??? Cheers, Barry

There is a discussion over on Toymods about the above topic. I contributed some info which may be of interest here too. All the new "Named" premium fuels not only have a higher RON but also have a higher DENSITY. This means greater energy per unit volume thus you could develop more power for the same throttle opening or alternatively more economy for the same power output as regular ULP. Last year I surveyed these fuels and found the following densities. Some have these figure on their web sites others responed to email questions. I expect all could be changed without notice. This predated the Vortex98 release. Shell ULP 0.735 Optimax 0.76 Mobil 2000 0.72 8000 0.76 BP ULP 0.735 Ultimate 0.755 Caltex ULP 0.74 Vortex 0.75 (95RON) This indicates that Caltex has the better ULP and Shell and Mobil the better 98 Cheers, Barry

Ahhhhhh, I see the photo's. A real can of worms. The 3KC in my car is really clean, only PCV and one other pipe from rocker cover to aircleaner or carb. I guess the power reduction must be due to a smaller carb or a reduced compression ratio because there is no obvious visible difference from a 3K. Case closed, you've satisfied my curiosity. Barry
-
Thaks guys. Yes I presume it is the "emission stuff" that is the culprit but where is this emission stuff? All I can see is a PCV and an idle cut off. Must be hidden somewhere or is it just a very small carb?
-
Yeah that looks like it. It is up for grabs to anyone in Sydney. I don't know what they will charge for the engine but there is nothing at all left of the interior.
-
After studying WiKi I see that the 3KC is somewhat detuned from the original 3K. I can't see much in the way of external stuff on the engine or carb so I presume the cause is entirely internal to the carb. Can anyone enlighten me please. Barry

I noticed a ?P71 starlet at Pick N Payless (Blacktown) on the weekend should anyone be interested in that sort of thing. I've not noticed that shape on the roads before so it caught my eye. The interior was burnt out but the engine bay was untouched and intact when I saw it. Sorry I don't remember the Engine indentifier, perhap it was E . Cheers, Barry

Tried searching but to no avail. Does anyone know if a KE30 pitman arm will fit KE11?
-
Many thanks, it's got a 7psi and an overflow bottle so looks like I had better sort that one.
-
Can some knowlegable person please tell me the correct pressure cap for a KE30. Yes I have tried a search and looked at WiKi.
-
I knew that you knew that, I couldn't resist the wind up though.

Thanks again folks. !. I have alway been under the misaprehension that oil thinned when it got hot Mr Super Jamie!!. It has a 30 -50 grade in it now. 2. This engine of mine has only done 63,000 km so I don't think it has worn bearings, I'll be trying a thinner grade next to see if the oil gets to the tensioner quicker.
-
Time to call on the collective wisdom of Corolla land. I've noticed lately especially since the weather turned a little colder that the 3K has a distimct rattle for a minute or so after starting then it quietens. Do these engines have a hydraulic tensioner on the chain that perhaps is a little slower to take up the slack when the oil is thicker? Is this a problem? Is it anything to be concerned about? Barry

Many thanks, This place is such a gold mine of information.. Barry

Firstly, yes I have searched for the subject to no avail. Still having some trouble in the cold mornings. I don't have a manual so could someone tell me what it says about choke/throttle adjustment. IE how much should the choke linkage open the throttle when the choke is applied.
-
Thanks all. Changed to winter setting, problem sorted.
-
Mr Grim, Indeed it was grim for a while but don't worry about the flying, I just got caught in a bad situation when quite inexperienced. We were flying low on a rally spotting object to answer questions etc etc. 500ft above ground under cloud and kept opening the throttle to maintain power. When the throttle was fully opened I realised there was probably icing. Now applying full carb heat to an significant ice load causes a big power loss for a few minutes while the ice melts and as we were already low we had a problem didn't we and those trees looks very tall so I quickly put it down on an old ag strip. It ran normally later offcourse, and I went home tail between legs.

Thankyou once again. I presume one winds in (leans) the screw until it runs roughly and then richen a turn or two? Barry
-
Thanks, that confirms my suspicions. I had this trouble really bad once before in a Cessna and caused me an emergency landing.
-
Do K engines suffer from Carb icing. I have noticed since the weather got cooler here in Sydney that the beast stalls soon after driving off in the morning. Today with rain it stalled many times until it got really hot. Should I use the winter setting on the stock air cleaner?

JetA1 ( Avtur) is essentially very clean kerosene with some anti misting characheristics to reduce fire risk in accidents, will a diesel run on kero? Barry
-
Avgas is currently 100/130 octane. That is 100 at lean mixtures and 130 when rich. Aircraft engines are operated at rich settings for take off and initial climb (full throttle) and then as the atmoshpere thins one leans the mixture to achieve a peak Exhaust Gas Temp on the EGT gauge and then richen slightly for continuous operation. My point is that for the most time one is operating lean, IE at the 100 octane area as would most vehicles. I see little point in using 100 avgas when 98 Optimax/Ultimate is available. Oh by the way this too would have a rating well in excess of 98 when at rich mixture (full throttle). Keep your money in your pocket use the 98 stuff. Cheers, Barry

Thankyou Mr SuperJ. The 4K pulleys I saw were larger. Hmmmm better remeasure all this. I'm not reving this poor little guy much at all. It's in factory overrated condition owned by a little old lady who had to give it away and it only has 63000km. I am simply tarting it up for my daughter who doesn't care to rev the stuffing out of it or go anywhere too quickly. The only thing she wants is A/C, so that gave me a little engineering challenge and with the collective expertise here I'm sure I can transplant some kit out of a KE55/70 into this KE30. Already got all the engine bay mechanicals off a KE70 just waiting on the interior from a 55. thanks again, Barry
-
Thanks folks, yes I do know that the 4K double pulley exists but the fan/alt pulley is significnatly larger than a standard 3K. Puzzled, what to do.
