Thanks coln72, I just discovered toyrolla spares last night and will ring them at some stage to see what they have got. If not i will visit the local wreckers. Toyrolla spares I am now interested in putting on a 3k-b twincarb setup and so will see if toyrolla can get them in. Anyone have experience with these ?

Looking good man, can't wait to see it all put together :P
-
Wow, That would have been fun to be near! (as long as your not within shrapnel range)
-
Ok, what else have you other guys got ? Anyone who has not put their specs up, now is the time ! Cheers
-
Looking good man, will be watching this one closely :P
-
Cheers philbey, I will get in touch with pete at some stage soon to disscus some of the engine related stuff. I will talk to kangaroosa closer to the time Dougal
-
philbey, do you know where pete robinson sources his 5ks? Or even a good wreckers in melbourne for them ? I have been down to centre road wreckers, but they only had 1 KE20 and that was it rolla wise. Better still, where did you get yours ?
-
Thanks coln72, dfunkt, Raven Good to get an idea on the price :P
-
Once again it depeds on where you are, this ^^ may not apply to you depending on where you are.
-
Fair enough, aggree on the price.....................that is what stopped me buying a KE17 recently. I personly think they are not worth what some people want for them (after all they are not a phase III GTHO). Don't get me wrong though, old rollas are cool cars :P What do you think a fair price from a wreckers is ? Are there new-old-stock motors available or jap imports ? Cheers
-
Lets see some pics :P Sounds like it is coming along well :)

I am glad the KE20 will at least have rear drums (i figure this is a good start compared to all wheel drums) but i also understand that in the long run the brakes will have to be done (along with the suspension and diff). Another thing i am interested in is the cost of buying a 5k. The couple of estimates i have had are well apart (one was $550 and the other was $150). What did you guys pick one up for and where ? Cheers
-
Exactly, i have been told i can argue that a 5k is ok because it is from the same engine family (same with 202s in toranas). Just to be on the safe side I am going to drop in the 5k and not tell anyone. I am going to be riding on the fact that most cops won't know the difference. Also i have heard that lodging a change of engine number with vicroads can be a pain in the arse, so i figured i will see how i go without. anastasios, it will be a n/a engine. With the new laws there is a blanket ban on all turbo and superchagers (with the exeption of a suzuki cappuccino) WIKI There is also a ban on all "perormance modifications", and they would consider changing to a 2TG illegal. (likewise with the cam, head work and extractors) As long as i keep most of the mods internal and stay out of trouble i should not have any problems.
-
Thats more or less what i am planing on as well, i figured an increase in capacity would be a good start and thats why i am looking at a 5k. fusion, a t series engine is certainly out of the question for me because unfortunately i am going to fall under the new vic p-plate laws. (although what i am doing is breaking the laws anyway) The 5k should be good fun though. A cam, head port + shave, extractors and balancing should be a good start.

Thanks guys, will keep it in mind. I think i will do the engine gradually, (both due to my cashflow and doing year 12 this year). Sounds like a 5k head will be fine..........................sweet as :P Its good to have a few people who have experience with k motors giving me advice , thanks guys ! :)

Thanks guys it is good to find out a bit more. coln72, looks like fun in a motokhana ! :'( I Have been to a few with my mate and i think i might give it a go sometime ! Thanks again cameron, i think i will run a 5k head (seeing it will already be on it). What do you reckon ? At this stage i would say it will be what i will use, unless i end up with a 4k engine. What about a 4k head on the 5k (with a shave job to up the compression) would that be any better? Let me know which is best/easyest to convert to solids with. Cheers
-
I have heard this from a number of people and do not doubt their strength :'( I asked in a thread a while ago how the bottom end holds up and everyone said they were bulletproof. Link to thread I also asked the engine builder who will be doing my head and he said the same thing. (i do not doubt their strength at all) I understand that they are a simple, tough and fairly well designed engine. I just want to get my head around what others are doing, and now what i may have to do in the way of lifters. For quite a while i was going to build a 4k, until Pete Robinson (early corolla dealer and mechanic) suggested that a 5k will be best. So this is why i am looking at a 5k. Although it will all depend on what i can find.

Alright, How long have you guys been running your engine combos for, and what has it been used in ? (street ? racing?) I am just trying to find out how best to do it all, and what is involved in building a reliable motor. Obviously people are going to have conflicting veiws and so i have to weigh up all options, and the pros and cons of each. I figure that if i do the research before i actually get started i can avoid stupid mistakes and build a reliable motor that will suit my purpose. Sometimes i may seem to ask stupid questions, but please bear with me. I am trying to learn about these cars and working on them and this is one of the few resources available to young guy like me.

Thanks cam, Baffling won't cost me much to do myself, so i may as well do it to be safe. I probably do want a bit more than 6 grand, and now remember your previous coment about loss of vacuum :'( So i think i will follow your advice about solids. (now that i think of it i doubt many places would have anti-pump lifters to suit anyway) When i get up to building the engine i will get back in touch with you on how you have done the conversion in the past. I will certainly be getting all the internals balanced for peace of mind, especially seeing i can get it done cheaply through a mate. When i get up to building the motor i might have to buy two and make one from two. This may mean i can get a good set of pistons + rods in it. Thanks again for your help and patience, Dougal

It was just that i am considering doing hillclimbs, and one of my mates was suggesting i would need a bigger sump (or baffling) to allow for the oil sloshing to one side through corners, (to ensure i get a constant supply). But once again, if i don't need it i won't spend the money  (as the saying goes, ''if it aint broke, don't fix it !'') Thanks
-
I was considering just getting a set of anti-pump lifters, but am unsure. :'( I won't be going further than 8 grand in this car, in fact it won't go much higher than 7 because my cam will probably run out about then. If you reckon it is good for that i think i will go without, to save a bit of dough and then if i have a prob i will fix it. coln72, were you running baffles in your sump for the race car, or was it just standard ?
-
Should be good fun :'( Do you have any pics of the car now + the engine ? Cheers
-
Thanks cameron, an interesting read. Unfortunately i will not be able to get things done anywhere near as cheap as you, so i might have to cut some corners. :'( I will probably only use oversize slugs if the bores are shot, and bigger valves if i can afford it. I am thinking about putting in a bigger sump, or just baffling the standard one. Have you found baffling the standard one to be sufficent ? Thanks for more advice on lifters, i think four good reasons is enough to convince me to switch to solids ! Do you have any pics of your car ? I would be keen to see a few. Thanks again  , Dougal

Thanks felix, this helps a lot. :'( When i get around to talking to the guy who is doing my head i will keep it in mind.
-
So................what have the rest of you got ? And, does anyone know about those valve/port sizes, and if there is space for bigger valves in the 5k? Many thanks :'(
