Ah actually the noise first started happening for me after a motorkhana. Whether that was because of the water or the intense engine stress I don't know but there is a trend here.

coln72: I said "a trolley wheel that needs WD40" as a weird comparison for the noise my car makes. My engine does not incorporate any kind of shopping trolley wheel but thankyou for thinking i'm such a creative car tuner. I think WD-40 is oil or incorporates oil. It generally stops squeaks. Its interesting that oil is actually the cause of fan belt squeaks! :D Dry alternator? What that mean? Actually a while ago I was having troubles with my battery being flat after 10+ hours of inactivity. I assumed it was because I left my head unit connected and ahve been stopping doing that, giving it a lot of pumps of fuel and putting my foot to the floor when I turn the key. Could still be an alternator problem there. No not twincam, I wish, I have a 4K-C Random funny: my gf just said "oh cool. Its like a support group for your child. Except its not your baby. And you're not a mother." And of course I replied yes it is my baby... =) :)

Ok so sometimes, getting more often now, on startup and lower revs the engine makes that terrible fan belt "SQUEEEEEEEEE"... so I've tightened the fan belt, but it still does it. Also from 1000 to 1500 revs half the time it goes "sqik sqik sqik sqik" like a squeeky trolley wheel that needs WD40 or something, as well as fairly often doing the "SQUEEE" crap. Should I be replacing the fan belt? Chiars guys :)

Group Training Australia supplies all necessary tools for the duration of an apprenticeship... :)

3/4 of people have said that professional mechanics will NOT want to work on thier own car... but it seems most if not all mechanics have decent cars? I dunno I'm pretty obsessed with cars maybe being a mechanic would help get it out of my system so I can move on to other things more willingly at the end of the day :) It sounds like there are a lot of wankers in the industry

if 4age is the obvious... sr20det?......

BLCJET was that black supra with purple flames I mentioned in some other post to anyone who remembers. He doesn't actually have a very fast 1/4mile time but he kills rear tires like anything

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to vent my love, Teddy. lol When I was looking to buy a first car I was looking for a TA22 celica but eventually got impatient with finding a good contender, so followed up an ad for an old corolla just because I knew they were a reliable and cheap car. So I get there right, its a KE70, except its got bright blue paint and dished mags, with a sunroof to boot. Cool! Get in.. f@$ked interior.. oh well what do u expect. Drive it... didn't really know cars back then but it sounded cool and didnt have any bad noises. Not fast, but again what do u expect. I buy it and am happy with a pretty cool looking daily driver, that is manual and RWD to boot. Oh and a sunroof. That feeling never wore off and evolved to the state I'm in now, catching myself looking lovingly at my car sometimes, pity about how tight the exhaust pipe is. Its just cool, its really original and interesting, it has a lot of soul. Its a bright blue corolla! Its super user friendly to tinker with. I even love it for no reason. I learnt to drive in it! The engine puts up with a lot of shit. If I crash it, oh well its either cheap parts or a writeoff that doesnt hurt my wallet's feelings too much at all. This car was a successful mass product for a reason and I am proud to have a modified version of what most people just have because its cheap and reliable. Corollas deserve a lot of love, they are good to us. Part of my love for my car would be biased by the fact I have a good stereo and love music :)

Ah, wankers. Where do they all come from? Oh thats right, wankers multiply. You think they would stick to wanking...

how about f*ck anyone who judges people based on their career and i'm glad none of my friends are like that. Its downright ignorant. Nuff said. -Still pending on whether I do go for Apprenticeship

Tell me about it... Thats most of the guys at work... i try my hardest to treat every car i work on as if it was my own... but when you get supervisors saying NO THAT TAKES TOO LONG JUST DO THIS (dodgie way)... pisses me off.. What I've come to realise is there's dickheads like that no matter what industry you're in. I handle the fruit&veg at my work and my boss often says "no" when I go to throw out fruit or veg that is just old and gross that I wouldn't want to eat myself. His mind is on the money, my mind is on customer satisfaction. That said, he is a neatness freak and I am not. Either way, no matter where you go there are going to be annoying people, dickheads and idiots. In no particular order. I guess there is more chance to find alcaholic bogans in the automotive industry? The other say I was seasoning chickens and not serving the counter and these two bogans came to the counter and one said "nah mate he can't serve he's fingering chickens... fingerin em... fingering the chickens..." he went on like that for a bit and it was really disturbing. I don't want to work with people like that.

I have heard mechanics are the lowest paid trade, but I have also heard all tradies get good money. Any comments on that?

Really! Well I did a year and a bit of Environmental Science after I finished school, then I quit and I've been working in a convenience store biding my time since then. I figure, why rack up a hecs debt if I'm unsure I want to work in the field that I'm studying... I mean the environment is doomed anyway and I really don't mind polluting all that much. haha jk's rocks are really interesting! I specialised in Geology, did u? What kind of job have u ended up with? Pay well? I've been told by many that Geologists can earn like $100,000 a year on oil rigs ...working with rocks... as opposed to cars Oh yeah there was a career website I looked at a year ago of people who have finished Environmental Science and gotten a job with thier wages and that... Like 1 was earning a lot, maybe 60thou a year, two were earning 30thou or so, and a fourth was working at the ticket booth for a pay car-park for $15thou a year after finishing his degree... :)

yeah corollas having a fusebox behind the speaker is a bit odd but not that hard to get to so i can't complain

mm reminds me of that $6000 ke70 with sr20det in brisbane.. thats a pretty darn good price... but its probably just a finished project worth negative money because of what it needs done... anyway sticking to the subject, i don't think a ca18det compared to a 3K is a boat anchor... thats like saying a silver ring instead of a tin ring is shit because its not gold. who needs bling anyway. never mind

...maybe think about taking off everything on top of the carburettor?

my head is disturbed by this whole thread

Good point- you pay to go to uni, you get paid crap to be an Apprentice, but you get paid...
-
Thanks for all the posts guys, I'm seriously reconsidering going back to uni and just getting a higher paid job and keeping cars as a hobby. Mentioned the idea to a mechanic mate of mine today and he said "You'll end up hating cars. Its only good when you're working on your own." Its probably true and I guess the learning process can just be kept on the top shelf of my recreational life instead of entering a low-paid bitch of a career. :angrybird: As for tools, I only own a set of superworks gold spanners, a few other odds and ends I picked up from supercheap, and I use random old tools that are already in the shed for everything else  Out of my league. You... mechanics!
-
Thanks mate that was helpful :angrybird: Yeah I know about the remote-area deal and its huge money. Another use for knowing cars is owning your own business... not to mention the joy of knowing your stuff when it comes to recreational car stuff anyway. If i end up buying a lot of tools that is fine with me if it means I get to use them on my own car in the longrun anyway. I do love cars a lot and building my own engine would be fantastic, I doubt I will go through life without achieving that somehow. That really is ridiculasly low pay though. I'm 20 so its a late start. I'm not getting married before 25 though f*ck that  Whycome you didn't get to just use the tools at the garage you worked for?

I'm considering going for a mechanic's apprenticeship, I realise every one of the apprenticeships would be different, but does anyone have any good/bad things to say about taking it up? I understand the mechanic trade is currently a flooded market. a post open to any comments on the topic :angrybird:
