  1. bugger. Conrod out the block?
  2. My beema gearbox takes ATF too. If you are confident that its not power steering (im not convinced) and If you dont know the history maybe someone put ATF in your manual box. Dont all the drifto ae86drivinclub dudes put ATF into their T50 gearboxes in an attempt to fix unfixable synchros? maybe someone did the same to yours.
  3. yerp. timing light runs off the spark plug coil. it Don't care how the coil was asked to fire:) Ill play the devils advocate and say in the few yrs i owned my 4k with points, they never really gave me any hastle. bought a new set every year cause they are like 5bucks, never burnt any out. just they were so cheap i threw a new set in. The electronic ignition system is superior, but there also should be no reason points should continually burn out. They are tedious to adjust but i never had much trouble. I once put a screw driver in to adjust the points....with the ignition on...far out what a buz a coil gives you at full power. Would not recommend.
  4. Yah i was wondering the same. I cant quite work out the purpose of the larger tunnel at the rear. If its live axel i suppose it allows for more bump travel? If its IRS i'm not sure what benefit there is. But I'm sure there is a good reason:)
  5. Or provide more thrust than the 4k by itself ever did.
  6. Pepboys...sounds like you are in america? this website is predominantly australian, but there are a few yanks around:) I'd ring all your local tyre shops and ask them for the best price. see what options they have ask them for the cheapest and also something mid range. Tyres are very much personal preference really, I generally go for mid range tyres in some sort of known brand. Try and avoid chinese branded tyres, they are cheap but they are cheap for a reason. Don't go to the dealership if you like your money in your pocket.
  7. Far out i would never do that and id never recomend anyone do it. Sounds like a good way to risk bending a valve. The only time something like rope should go into a cylinder is when trying to keep the valves up when changing the valve springs or valve stem seals.
  8. Starter motor not too bad but it is a relativley fiddly task. Anyone you can borrow a 1/2" drive rattle gun from? I have one, it has changed my life.
  9. Screw driver in the ring gear has worked in the past.
  10. Put it back in the barn.
  11. Maybe bleed that coolant system eh.
  12. haha, love it. Looks like a fun project. I painted my ke70 back in the day, pretty fun job. What sort of paint are you going to use?
  13. haha good! Although admittedly steering components should probably fail the RWC :P
  14. Is he charging you for each inspection? Cause i do know "a guy" who is rather lenient.
  15. Time goes on. I remember checking out this thing probably about half way through the build when i bought an ECU or a loom or something from the TRD boys way back when. That would have been 2009ish. Apparently that is 8yrs ago :|
  16. We still talking about a 4k? Was your last car a horse? Haha
  17. How far does the "its not sold unless I have cash in my hand" Extend? Friday arvo i spot an air compressor advert on gumtree, advert been up for 2hrs, i sent a message on gumtree to confirm it was available, guy gets back to me quite quick says yep. so i call him up, nice enough guy, I tell him im at work 2hrs away and wasnt sure what time i would be home but i would like to buy it could i pick it up on saturday at 9am? dude sais yep not an issue, he gives me his address, we realise he is 3 streets away, we have a bit of a chuckle, all good. I make a comment i hope it fits in the car, he offers to deliver it to me, i said i should be ok. all is good i hang up happy i got a compressor. 30mins later, "sorry, its been sold already" Thinking maybe he meant the message for someone else I rang him back, same dude aswers but commpletely different attitude, i say hey we just spoke about the compressor but you sent me a message saying it sold was it a mistake? He sais no its not sold until the cash is in my hand, someone just came and picked it up. I'll be honest i was kinda half in shock at what i was hearing and sort of gave a bit of a rude comment and hung up. Yes it was just an air compressor, yes it was only 200bucks, but daaaayymm is this how people operate? I understand some people might not turn up after organising to a time but do you just ignore the verbal contract. no "hey someone just called and is coming tomorrow but if he doesnt take it you are second in line" He ran a business too, guess where i'm not getting my metal signs made....ever.
  18. I wouldn touch the head with a file for fear of getting aluminium down the ports. Just the manifolds.
  19. Run a flat file across the face, that will tell you how bad it is. if the file touches the whole surface as you rub it back and forwards that's about as good as it gets. Ive never had a manifold resurfaced....
  20. Depends how enthusiastic you wanna get with DIY. With alternators and starter motors i have always just dropped them off at the local auto electrician and got mine either rebuilt or bought a change over unit. If you do that there is a good chance it will last another 300,000kms:)
  21. They are only m10 or m12, shouldn't need much torque at all. the old "firm" but not tight is the key. Its all aluminium so don't swing off them. I never did change my 4k to studs/nuts on the intake manifold, but once i got a 1 piece gasket i also never had to undo them ever again.
  22. Got a multi meter? Put it across thw battery with the engine off and once again with the engine on. Should be 12ish with engine off and 13ish with engine on. If its not 13ish your alternator is the culprit:)
  23. You gotta start the obsession early. So why not start with the best. Also they say never meet your heros. Screw that, now I really really want an f40.
  24. hi mate, welcome to the forum. AE82 4age, fun little car. Here is what i would check in order: - Engine ecu codes -ignition timing -clean and regap spark plugs, check dizzy cap and rotor condition -check the TVIS solenoid is plugged in and the vac lines are in good condition -confirm fuel pressure -adjust TPS -make sure MAP sensor vac line is in good condition -Camshaft timing If you have all of those things in order, technically you should be motoring......
