  1. yep i got mine sorted last night. I looked at this pin out diagram http://www.club4ag.com/technical_main.htm#...0and%20Learning and realised its the ground wire, so just wire the light up to a +12V and then the other side of the light to the thin red wire. boom presto it works :jamie: Ke70Dave confirmed that it is wired like this today too.
  2. it doesnt move regardless of whether or not i am in diagnostic mode. however today i did look at the IGN and IGF wires as well as the 3 distributor wires and found the distributor wires were a bit frayed and after crimping on new terminals and plugging it all back up, i took it for a drive and the whole car felt a lot smoother and it felt good through out the rev range compared to before where it was a little hesistant below 2500rpm. running out to the shop tonight to grab some batteries so i can get the timing light running again and see if my problem was fixed.
  3. Hey Dave I wired up the check light as you said, did it last night and when i bridged the terminals all I was getting was one flash every ~3 seconds at a constant rate... which is telling me it is 'normal" with no errors if I am reading that right.
  4. Check vacuum hoses too... I was doing reversies in a ford laser when i was younger and a vacuum hose popped off some how, engine cut out and i spent ages trying to figure wtf happened only to find a loose vacuum hose. plugged it on and it started up again
  5. Sorry it is a conversion into a KE70, i pulled motor out of an AE71 so I did not do the initial conversion. but those plugs appear not to be tampered with, and looking at photos of other plugs online the colour coding of the wires are the same? so in regards to that ignition not advancing I should check the IGN wire from ecu to the igniter first I suppose? and thanks a lot parrot, I've been hunting for manuals like those for way too long!
  6. Ok so I've queried in a few places but still havn't really gotten an answer yet. but when i went to set my timing I noticed that my car does not advance as you rev it. I also read that there is a diagnostic terminal that needs to be bridged, by this I assume it is meant that I have to connect the blue/white wire in this port to the brown earth wire, correct or incorrect? I also used the pin out table for the ecu and traced the diagnostic connector wire to the engine bay, and found it was leading to the four pin plug next to the two pin plug that i was under the impression i should be bridging. Am I meant to be earthing this red/white (diagnostic connector) wire instead of the blue wire in the two pin plug? or am I meant to connect the red/white from the four pin plug to the blue/white from the two pin plug? Also I was informed that the engine has like a fail safe type of thing going on, which when the engine isn't getting a ignition signal from the ecu it will run at a set ignition timing without any advance through the revs (which seems to be my problem). Does this mean the ignitor wire from the ecu might not be connected properly? Or which wires are the ones I should investigate to solve this issue of no advance?
  7. how do you wire it up though?just simply the wire from the ecu and then to earth? i was thinking of putting a polished ali plate over the area where old radio went then putting a small light in there along with any other relevant extras.
  8. after putting my 4ag in i want to wire up a check engine light, i got the ecu wiring diagram, am just wondering if there is a unused light on the ke70 dash or if i can just simply wire in a loose lamp at all?
  9. Thanks KE70dave :P like most rookies on the forum i just want to set up my car as a nice drift car but still keep it as a daily so the s13 gear sounds quite appealing. what kind of spring rates did you find worked well with that set up? quick rookie question but how does the different steering arms actually affect the turning abilities? i would imagine they would all be same length when installed in order to keep alignment right so how does changing arms differ the turning abilities of the car?
  10. ok so its all up and running now and i was adjusting the timing today.... i tried bridging that two prong plug and adjusting the ignition timing, but bridging did nothing. i first checked timing at idle without the bridge, then i revved it and my timing didnt advance at all as the revs picked up.... then i put the bridge in and nothing changed, idle stayed the same, timing stayed the same and it also didnt advance. my timing was also at some rediculous number like ~22-25 BTDC i set it down to around 12 now as I'm unsure what's going on with the timing advance not engaging?
  11. yeah i realised that there is more than just the struts that need to be replaced. i did find a list of parts needed, just chasing experience and opinions as i saw people commented about the geometry getting thrown out but then others said its fixable etc. let me know how that dato swap goes, I'm in no rush to do anything yet just sorting my options so i can get my list of 'to do's' fixed up
  12. read recently that the ca18 front struts is a good upgrade for the KE70s, just wondering what your experiences with that were and whether or not it was a good/bad move? found a few little write ups but nothing solid yet..
  13. yep it was just a trigger wire issue, the wiring loom between the AE and KE was varied slightly so a quick check with the multimeter let me find the correct wire at the fuse box end and just spliced it in from there. its all good and going now, pretty successful first build over in just a weekend and 2 extra afternoons.
  14. I have basically straight swapped a 4age big port from my ae71 which was damaged into a ke70, both were 1984 slant fronts. Basically when I did the swap i put bits of tape with labels on each part i disconnected so that I could just plug it all straight back in. I did this and now the engine is in, when i turn it on and try turning it over it is pumping fuel but not turning over. I did notice this wire, which has been stripped but has nothing on it, I am wondering if it might have had a terminal on that should plug in somewhere or not? it is plain black and it leads towards the ECU's side of the loom, the stripped end is located near the plug which connects to the exhaust manifold.
  15. yep sounds exactly like what mine does, I'm throwing the motor into another shell anyway so maybe I'll pipe it up when it's out of the car...
  16. sweet thanks a lot mate, the guy i bought it of did the conversion and said they weren't really relevant, lucky i mentioned them as i wasn't going to at first...
  17. I got a ae71 running a big port 4age which was a fwd converted to a rwd. On cold starts it struggles to idle, when you start it you need to keep a bit of gas on to keep it idling otherwise it cuts out, after about 15 - 20 seconds it idles better, sitting around 900rpm. when warmed up though it sits around 1100 - 1150 and i have the little idle speed screw that adjusts the butterfly rest position opened fully. any ideas where i should start looking? has relatively new plugs ( <4000km), leads, clean oil and filter, clean air filter and running on 98. There are some water pipes that are meant to run into the intake under the TB that havn't been connected yet if that has any relevance? I have taken the battery off for about an hour too to let the ecu reset when i first got it as well.
  18. yeah sorry for bumping an old thread but was just going through all the pages trying to find info so i thought i'd quickly ask.
  19. i read somewhere that the sierra shocks drop the ride height considerably, how much does it drop by? you could always use the lift kit shocks for the sierra to not lose ride height right?
  20. any suggestions in brands of springs / shocks to use? i see alot of people go for 8kg front 6 rear for the spring rates but read somewhere that a set up like this is quite harsh on your car's body?
  21. the one in balcatta area? i thought it was a good score, unfortunately the diff is a bit tired though so thinking of replacing it asap. whats the deal with the rolla meets? can u pm me some info?
  22. haha sweet gota love sweet noises! and yea its blue
  23. thanks mate just what i needed to know. just out of curiosity, i see bulk people do the quad throttle conversion - whats the benefit apart from a bit better response?
  24. good call, i have driven it for a while now though and for stock suspension it felt pretty good so i thought that could wait a while, but if i must a start would be stiffer slightly lower springs then shocks afterwards? I can't really be arsed trying to do a coil over conversion on it or are they basically a bolt in mod for these shells? once again pardon the ignorance but i know FA about AE71s and what works/ doesnt, mainly been reading up on the engine and still have heaps of reading to do on the shells. I'm just trying to organise a structured plan to work with, so i can list in order what needs to be done. so lets say after the suspension what would be the first place to start? I have worked on and fixed a fair few engines / cars before but i never did a upgrade project like this before so its all pretty confusing. I'm still creepin through the forums for info but any suggestions are welcome.
