  1. well that makes things more difficult. Meh. I've got plenty of time.
  2. ok, so i've taken off the exhaust manifold, the air filter, the distributor, and the valve cover. Now i'm looking into it and i can see the bolts which (i think) will get me down to where the gasket is. Theres a problem. They're under the cam shafts! Is there another way of doing this or do the cam shafts have to come out too?
  3. i've got an old manual and it has lots of big words and no pretty pictures to explain. I'm really inexperienced with these things. What doe a compression test involve? Also, i want to do it myself because i'm extremely broke. I barely have enough to cover the cost of the new gasket. How much would a mechanic charge to pressure test it? I live in campbelltown, sydney.
  4. I was driving home this morning and my engine (4a-F) started spluttering. I got home thinking it was one of the spark plugs but when i pulled them out i discovered water on one of them. I cranked it with all the plugs out and out burst water from the fourth cylinder ): This would mean my head gasket is stuffed. Or theres a crack. I'm realllly hoping its the first possibility. I've never done this before, nor do i have any idea how its done, but i have google, all of you, and plenty of time on my hands (i deliver pizzas for a living so no car means no work). So i need all the help you can offer me on how to replace the head gasket. 1. If theres someone with enough time on their hands, could you post a step by step for me? 2. Are there any specialised tools which i'll need? 3. As someone with little mechanical experience, how long would you say this would take? (my boss wants to know how long i'm gonna be off the road.) 4. Are there any other parts i might need in pulling it apart? (other than the head gasket) 5. How much damage can i do if i do this wrong?
  5. So i found a diy guide on how to port and polish in an old autosalon magazine. I've never done this before. Will it be beneficial to corolla? It has the 4A-F engine. What are the dangers if i get something wrong. Can anyone who has done this before give me some tips?
  6. The engine is definately carby, i know that much, its 4a-F, and i have csi limited sticker on the side. I got the bosch copper plugs. By expensive i mean the platinum/iridium ones.
  7. So i friggin love my corolla, which i've named freedom. Its an all stock(at the moment) 1991 Seca Csi limited with the 4A-F engine(thats the carbureted one right?). I recently lost my job and so i have a lot of time on my hands, so i've been spending a lot of time on the car. I don't have a great deal of coin, so all i've done is replace the spark plugs, brake pads, leads, filters etc but now i want to start adding on rather than maintaining. I'm a bit a noob with cars but with all the problems my corolla had, i've started learning. My questions are: What does Csi limited mean? What about it is limited? just curious.... Do more expensive spark plugs help? I just got the cheap ones coz i figure its just a spark which they have to make. can't be too much difference. I went to my local repco and the guy said you can't put a pod filter on a carburetted engine. True? If so, are there any alternatives? Is there the possibility that i could go to the wreckers and rip the EFI system out of a corolla there and replace the carbureter, or is it too much work? What would be involved? When i put the engine in neutral and rev it i hear a pinging noise. What is it, how can i fix it? You don't have to answer this one because its probably too broad, but what are the main causes of knocking noises coming from the engine bay? They aren't too loud, but they are there, especially when the engine is cold. I'd love to have the engine sound a little better. Thanks for any replies i get.
  8. well I'm off to do more investigating. I'll check around the drive shafts.
  9. thanks. its a 91 seca.
  10. So the placard in my corolla says that my tyres should be at 24 psi but when they're there they seem too low. I have the original stock wheels on. What is the best pressure to have them at?
  11. it doesnt matter how the wheels are oriented. As long as the car is moving it happens.
  12. left wheel area i mean. Not right
  13. So for the past couple of weeks i've had this really annoying, really light rattle coming from somewhere in the front right sorta area of the car. I pulled the wheel off and tinkered around then pu thte wheel back on and the rattle went away for like 10 minutes, and now its back. It sounds like.. umm.. two keys jingling together. Just a really light rattle. Anyone had it? Its driving me mad.
